Prefecture Route 1
Aichi/Nagano/Shizuoka Prefectural Route 1 is a favorite among cyclists for its stunning scenery and diverse landscapes. Winding through the mountains of Nagano and Shizuoka, this route offers a challenging yet rewarding ride, with panoramic views of forests, valleys, and the iconic Southern Alps. One of the highlights along the way is Sakuma Dam, a striking feature nestled in a beautiful gorge, providing a peaceful spot to rest and take in the surroundings. Cyclists will also enjoy passing through quiet rural towns, making this route perfect for those seeking a mix of nature, adventure, and local charm.
The Route
Route 1 end to end is 90km, but the ends are not easily accessible so it should be part of a longer route.
In particular the central section is on a narrow-ish road that hugs the side of the Tenryu River valley is particularly enjoyable
Staying
As the route is in the mountains, turning it into part of a 2 day trip can work well. Directly attached to Hiraoka Station is a convenient hotel that is reasonably priced
Other Notes
There are many great roads for cycling in the area, however there are frequent road closures so pay attention for signs on the road for detours and allow buffer to allow for time if a detour is needed.
Some road closures are only during the day or only weekdays so be sure to read the signs carefully.
