Riding the Nishi-Izu Skyline is a thrilling experience for cyclists seeking stunning views and challenging climbs. This scenic route in Shizuoka Prefecture winds along the ridges of the Izu Peninsula, offering panoramic vistas of Suruga Bay on one side and the towering peaks of Mount Fuji on the other, weather permitting.

The road features smooth pavement and a series of undulating ascents and descents, making it ideal for experienced cyclists who enjoy a mix of effort and reward. With few cars and abundant natural beauty, the Nishi-Izu Skyline provides a peaceful and exhilarating ride, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in one of Japan’s most picturesque coastal landscapes.

The Route

We’ve set the entire North South route here, but for a one-day trip, it’s easier to take Route 59 to the East and make one’s way back to the train.

While the climb up to the Skyline is quite significant (sea level to 1000m climb), once up the road is not particularly steep.
