Nasu-1
The NASU-1 (Nasu-Ichi) Cycling Course is one of Tochigi Prefecture’s premier long-distance cycling routes, showcasing the natural beauty, cultural attractions, and rural landscapes of the Nasu region. Covering approximately 150km, the route links the foothills of the Nasu Mountains with charming countryside roads, historic hot spring towns, and scenic riverside sections.
Designed for experienced cyclists, NASU-1 offers a rewarding challenge that combines rolling terrain, mountain views, and a variety of sightseeing opportunities. Riders can enjoy everything from highland plateaus and dairy farms to traditional temples and famous hot springs, making it an ideal route for cyclists seeking both adventure and cultural exploration.
Whether completed as a single long day ride or split over multiple days, NASU-1 provides an excellent introduction to the diverse landscapes of northern Tochigi.

The Route
The NASU-1 route forms a large loop through the Nasu area, beginning and ending near the Shinkansen station network, making it accessible from Tokyo and other major cities.
Several sections feature moderate climbs, particularly around the elevated areas near Nasu Kogen. While none of the climbs are excessively steep, the accumulated elevation gain can be significant over the full distance.
The route then descends through agricultural districts and traditional villages before following scenic rivers and country roads back toward the finish.
Road surfaces are generally excellent, traffic levels are low outside the towns, and convenience stores are frequent enough to make resupply straightforward.
The route is fully marked by both blue arrows on the road as well as signs on along the road

The Route includes the return leg back to Nasushiobara Station.

Things to Do and See
Mount Chausu (茶臼岳)
As the most recognizable peak in the Nasu mountain range, Mount Chausu dominates the skyline throughout much of the ride. On clear days, the volcanic landscape provides spectacular scenery and has a gondola to the summit

Nasu Onsen (那須温泉)
One of Japan’s oldest hot spring regions, Nasu Onsen offers numerous opportunities to relax after a long day in the saddle. Several public baths welcome day visitors.
Minamigaoka Dairy Farm (南ヶ丘牧場)
Known for fresh dairy products, ice cream, and local specialties, this farm makes an excellent rest stop for cyclists.
Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest (那須平成の森)
Protected woodland established as part of the Imperial family’s former retreat area. Walking trails and forest scenery provide a peaceful contrast to the open highlands.
Extra Riding
Cyclists looking for additional challenges can extend their ride in several ways.
Nasu Skyline Climb
A popular side trip climbs deeper into the mountains toward the upper reaches of Nasu. The ascent rewards riders with dramatic volcanic scenery and cooler temperatures during summer.
Happogahara Extention
If you’re riding the standard NASU1 route and want to add a serious climbing challenge, the Happogahara (八方ヶ原) Extension is arguably the best optional detour.
